Weighbridges - Options

There are three main configurations of scales that can be used to weigh vehicles:
Single axle scales, full truck scales and multi axle scales.
The style that is best suited to your needs depends on the type of weight information you want to get out of the application.

Steel / Concrete Decks

The Medium to Top of the range option

If you are looking for a reliable, long lasting weighbridge, this is what you want!

Steel/Concrete deck weighbridges are better suited for heavy duty weighing applications than steel deck weighbridges due to the strength that the reinforced concrete adds to the weighbridge’s structural integrity.
This prevents the steel work from flexing under heavy loads.
Concrete decks have better traction than steel decks as they can be slippery when wet.

 Steel/Concrete weighbridges are perfect for weighing rigid trucks and semi-trailers, deck lengths are available up to 30m and are either 3m or 3.5m wide.

It is important to consider the space available as these weighbridges require a large surface area to be built on.
Entry and exit ramps of up to 5m each add to the weighbridge length and a 1m clearing along both sides of the weighbridge deck should be incorporated to allow access to the load cells for cleaning and maintenance.
Your weighbridge approaches must consist of a hard and durable concrete surface or other approved material.

You should also consider how your trucks approach the weighbridge:
* Do trucks enter via a front gate, is there enough room to enter and drive onto the weighbridge
* Is there plenty of room to exit the weighbridge and turn back to leave via the front gate
* Are there buildings close by which could be damaged
* Are there pedestrians nearby - if so, safety measures need to be put in place
* Is there vehicle traffic near the weighbridge - if so, safety measures need to be put in place

A good way to assess your weighbridge location is to take aerial photos with a drone and use these to
plan your layout.

Steel Deck

 The affordable option

This weighbridge is the perfect solution for a small business looking for an affordable weighbridge. It is designed for light duty, meaning fewer than 200 trucks per day will drive over the scale.
It can be installed above ground or in a shallow pit, providing easy access to the load cells.
The chosen site for this weighbridge must have a bearing surface of at least 80kpa.
The H-shaped and U-rib steel adds a safe and reliable design which provides a long service life.

This steel deck weighbridge is available in 5m to 23.2m lenghth, 3 or 3.4m width and 15,000kg or 30,000kg capacity
and two options are applicable:
* Analog GD Load Cells
* Powercell GDD Load Cells

There is also the choice to install a middle cover (which can be removed for cleaning) and side rails for added safety.
A weigh terminal, remote display, printer and PC & custom written software will complete your new weighbridge setup.

This weighbridge is trade approved, meeting NMI standards.

In-ground Weighbridges

An in-ground weighbridge takes up the least surface area than any other type, but they are generally the most expensive to build because they usually require extensive excavation works, more concrete and greater levels of reinforcing.
Pits have a tendency to collect debris, spilled product and mud. They are difficult to clean and can become the perfect home for pests and rodents.
You also have to ensure there is effective drainage in place in order to avoid water damage.

It is also important to keep in mind that the weighbridge pit is considered 'confined space' and therefore at least two service personnel are required to carry out maintenance and/or repairs. This can potentially be very costly!

Some advantages:
* In-ground weighbridges do not require on and off ramps or guide rails
* Completely level weighing surface
* They are designed for use in narrow spaces
* Easy access for on bridge loading
